DIY Home Battery Backups: The Modern Generator

Written by Alex Navarro | August, 2025

For ages, the go-to solution for a power outage has been a gas generator. While commonplace, generators are noisy, require fuel, and aren’t always the most practical option for every homeowner. Today, there’s a new choice gaining popularity: portable home battery backup systems that don't require an electrician to install!

As a Massachusetts realtor, I have more and more clients asking about ways to make their homes more energy effecient & resilient. Portable battery backups are not only great for emergencies, but they’re also versatile enough for camping, road trips, and even everyday convenience. In this post, I’ll break down what makes these systems so useful, how they compare to traditional generators, and why I personally recommend the EcoFlow series batteries for many homeowners.

What Is a Portable Home Battery Backup?

A portable home battery backup is essentially a large rechargeable battery that stores energy and delivers it when you need it. These units can be charged from a standard outlet, solar panels, or even your car. Once charged, they can power everything from small devices like laptops and phones to essential appliances like refrigerators, sump pumps, and heating system controls.

Unlike traditional generators, these systems are:

  • Silent – no noisy engine rumbling in the background.

  • Safe indoors – no exhaust fumes or carbon monoxide risk.

  • Low-maintenance – no oil changes, no fuel stabilizer, no messy gas cans.

  • Expandable – many systems allow you to add more battery packs as your needs grow.

  • Portable - many of these are small enough to take with you in the car or camping!

There are are a wide range of options out there but if you're going for a larger system, the Delta Pro 3 is a useful beast and it can expand up to 48kWh. If you want to start small, like I did, you can get something extremely portable that can power your fridge through even a lengthy outage and even be recharged by it's own solar panels while out camping!

Everyday Uses Beyond Emergencies

One of the biggest benefits of these battery backups is how practical they are beyond just outages.

  • Camping & Outdoor Adventures – Keep lights, fans, and even portable fridges running off-grid.

  • Work-From-Anywhere – Need to power a laptop and Wi-Fi hotspot in a remote location? A battery backup makes it possible.

  • Events & Tailgates – Run speakers, projectors, or cooking gear without relying on a noisy generator.

  • Sustainable Living – Pairing your battery with solar panels can reduce reliance on the grid and cut costs over time.

Why I Recommend EcoFlow Batteries

I’ve researched so many different systems and the EcoFlow series batteries stand out for their balance of power, portability, and expandability. They offer options ranging from compact units for small devices to expandable systems that can support most of a home during an outage.

Personally, I use them at home and recommend them to my clients. They’re reliable, easy to set up, and practical for both emergencies and everyday situations.
